Can you imagine your Monday morning without a cup of caffeine? Try this Authentic Masala Chai, that will keep you energized throughout the day. No Indian family can start their day without this authentic masala chai, which is full of flavors and spices. The aroma from this chai is sufficient enough to pull me out of the bed. It is the morning beverage for everyone in my house.

Masala Chai isn’t just a drink in India; it’s a culture where you immerse yourself in the chai culture of India, where the chai wallahs (tea vendors) craft their brew on bustling streets, and chai tapris (tea stalls) become community hubs people spend hours sharing chai moments with friends and family.

The Dance of Spices

Masala Chai is a celebration of spices. Each spice plays a unique role in creating the symphony that defines masala chai. Flavors from freshly grated ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, loose tea granules and some fresh mint from the garden infused together with water, milk and some honey. You can’t beat that. If I ever have a headache or cold this chai gives me quick relief. Tea granules or tea powder can be purchased at any local supermarket. I prefer using tea granules from Indian store which is also available on Amazon.

There is numerous ways and variety of spices that you can use to make chai. Some people prefer to use black pepper corn and cloves. There is no right or wrong way to make. Do what your heart desires.

Masala chai is our go-to drink, especially during the cold snowy days. It is our family tradition to have a cup of tea in the evening while chatting about our day. Here is my take on the how to make chai, but you can customize it per your taste.

Bring the water with spices and loose tea powder to a boil. Tea powder can also be substituted with tea bags. Add milk and let it steep for at least 5 mins. Add honey or refined sugar for sweetness. Serve hot and enjoy this hot beverage during cold wintery days.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp. black tea granules

Spices

  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 5-6 green Cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, grated
  • 2-3 Cloves
  • 3-4 fresh mint leaves
  • 3 tbsp sugar

Instructions

Boiling the Tea

  • Start by bringing 1 cup of water to a boil in a saucepan. Add the loose black tea leaves and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the water gets infused with the tea flavor.

Infusing the Spices

  • Toss in the crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and grated ginger into the simmering tea. Allow the spices to meld with the tea, releasing their fragrant notes.

Adding Milk

  • Pour in 1 cup of milk, stirring gently to combine. Let the mixture simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the tea and spices to infuse into the milk.

Sweetening the Chai

  • Add 2-3 tbsp. of sugar, adjusting to your preferred level of sweetness. Stir well until the sugar dissolves completely.

Straining the Chai

  • Once the chai reaches a rich, golden color, strain it into your favorite cup or teapot. This ensures a smooth, flavorful chai without the tea leaves or spices.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Garnish your masala chai with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon stick for an extra touch. Pair it with your favorite snacks and enjoy!

Notes

  • Whole-milk can be substituted with Cashew milk, low fat milk or Oat milk.
  • Powdered spices can be used instead of whole spices.
  • Sugar can be substituted with Maple syrup or Honey and also adjusted per your taste.
  • I like to use half and half ratio of water and milk, but you can add less water, more milk or no water, just milk for more richness.
